Rating (out of 5): 2

Hericium mushroom, commonly known as Lion's Mane (Hericium erinaceus), has garnered scientific interest for its potential neuroprotective and neuroregenerative properties. Several preclinical studies—in vitro and in animal models—have demonstrated that compounds found in Hericium, such as hericenones and erinacines, can stimulate the synthesis of nerve growth factor (NGF). NGF is a critical protein involved in the survival, maintenance, and regeneration of neurons, which has direct relevance to conditions like neuralgia (nerve pain) and neuritis (nerve inflammation).

Some animal studies have shown that Hericium supplementation may alleviate symptoms of neuropathic pain and promote nerve repair following injury. A few small human clinical trials and case reports have hinted at improvements in peripheral neuropathy and mild cognitive impairment, but direct, high-quality evidence specifically for neuralgia or neuritis in humans is limited.

Overall, the scientific evidence is preliminary—much of it derived from animal studies or limited human trials with small sample sizes and methodological limitations. While the mechanism of action via NGF modulation is plausible and promising, robust clinical trials in humans targeting neuralgia or neuritis are lacking. Thus, current use is based on emerging scientific rationale rather than extensive clinical validation.
