Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Corydalis (primarily Corydalis yanhusuo) has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for the relief of various types of pain, including neuralgia (nerve pain) and neuritis (nerve inflammation). In TCM, Corydalis is thought to "invigorate the blood" and "move qi," helping to alleviate pain syndromes. Its traditional use is well-documented for conditions characterized by pain, particularly those involving the nerves. The primary active compound, tetrahydropalmatine (THP), has demonstrated analgesic properties in animal studies, which may partially explain its traditional use. However, while preclinical studies suggest potential pain-relieving effects, robust clinical trials in humans specifically targeting neuralgia or neuritis are lacking. Most of the supporting evidence remains anecdotal or based on traditional formulations rather than modern, controlled studies. As such, while Corydalis is widely used in traditional medicine for nerve-related pain, scientific validation for these specific indications is limited. Safety concerns, especially with long-term use or high doses, have also been raised. In summary, Corydalis's use for neuralgia and neuritis is primarily rooted in traditional practices, with some preliminary scientific support but lacking strong clinical evidence.
