Evidence supporting the use of: Black Hellebore
For the health condition: Neuralgia and Neuritis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Black Hellebore (Helleborus niger) has a long history of use in European herbal medicine, primarily dating back to ancient Greece and later throughout medieval Europe. It was traditionally used for a wide range of ailments, including neuralgic and rheumatic conditions. Historical texts mention its application for conditions characterized by nerve pain (neuralgia) and nerve inflammation (neuritis), often in the form of tinctures or decoctions. However, there is little to no robust scientific evidence from modern clinical trials supporting its effectiveness for neuralgia or neuritis. The plant contains toxic compounds such as helleborin and helleborein, which can cause serious side effects, limiting its use in contemporary herbalism. Today, Black Hellebore is rarely used in mainstream herbal medicine due to concerns over toxicity and lack of validated efficacy. Its reputation for treating neuralgic symptoms is thus based mainly on traditional use rather than scientific validation. The available evidence supporting its use for neuralgia and neuritis is weak and anecdotal, and modern medical guidance does not recommend it for these conditions.
