Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Arisaema cum bile is a traditional Chinese medicine formulation consisting of Arisaema (commonly known as "tian nan xing") processed with bile, usually from cattle. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), Arisaema cum bile is believed to have properties such as dispelling phlegm, relieving convulsions, and alleviating wind-phlegm conditions, which can manifest as neurological symptoms. Its application in conditions like neuralgia and neuritis stems from TCM theory, where such symptoms are at times attributed to "phlegm obstruction" or "wind-phlegm disturbing the meridians." However, scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of Arisaema cum bile specifically for neuralgia or neuritis is lacking. While a few laboratory studies have examined its anti-inflammatory or neuroprotective effects, these are not robust or directly linked to clinical outcomes in neuralgia or neuritis. No well-designed clinical trials have validated its effectiveness for nerve pain or inflammation. Thus, its use is justified primarily by tradition, with a low level of supporting evidence from scientific studies.
