Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) has traditionally been used to support emotional well-being and reduce symptoms such as nervousness, irritability, and mild mood disturbances. The rationale for this use stems from B6's role as a coenzyme in the synthesis of neurotransmitters, including serotonin, dopamine, and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which are associated with mood regulation and nervous system function. Historically, some practitioners and traditional medicine systems have recommended B6 supplementation for individuals experiencing nervousness or mild anxiety, particularly when related to premenstrual syndrome (PMS).

However, scientific evidence supporting the use of vitamin B6 specifically for "nervousness" is limited and not robust. Most clinical studies have focused on related domains such as depression, PMS-related mood symptoms, or general mood disorders, with mixed outcomes. For example, some small studies suggest that B6 supplementation may help reduce PMS-related emotional symptoms, but high-quality trials in the general population or in those with primary complaints of nervousness are lacking. Systematic reviews and authoritative sources, such as the NIH, do not list nervousness as an evidence-based indication for vitamin B6 supplementation. Therefore, while the traditional use is noted, the scientific validation is weak and evidence is rated low.
