Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) plays a crucial role in the synthesis of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), all of which are involved in mood regulation and nervous system function. Its use in addressing symptoms like nervousness is based on its biochemical function in the central nervous system. Some clinical studies and observational research suggest that Vitamin B6 supplementation may help reduce symptoms of mild anxiety or nervousness, particularly in individuals with low or marginal B6 status. A 2022 randomized controlled trial found that high-dose Vitamin B6 supplementation reduced self-reported anxiety in young adults, though the effect size was modest, and the study called for further research.

However, the overall scientific evidence is limited and somewhat inconsistent. Many studies either involve small sample sizes or combine B6 with other B vitamins or micronutrients, making it difficult to isolate its effects. Major clinical guidelines do not currently recommend Vitamin B6 as a primary treatment for nervousness or anxiety disorders. Nonetheless, deficiency in B6 is known to cause neurological symptoms, including irritability and nervousness, and correction of deficiency can resolve these symptoms. Therefore, while there is some biological plausibility and a small but growing body of research, the evidence supporting Vitamin B6 supplementation specifically for nervousness in the absence of deficiency is not strong.
