Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) has traditionally been used as a remedy for nervousness and other mood-related symptoms. This stems from the knowledge that B6 is involved in neurotransmitter synthesis, particularly serotonin, dopamine, and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), all of which play roles in mood regulation and nervous system function. Folk and alternative medicine practitioners have historically recommended B6 supplementation for symptoms like irritability, anxiety, and nervousness, especially in cases related to premenstrual syndrome (PMS) or hormonal changes. However, robust scientific evidence directly supporting B6 supplementation for nervousness in the general population is limited. Some clinical trials have shown mild benefits in specific contexts, such as PMS-related mood symptoms, but overall, there is insufficient high-quality research to establish B6 as an effective standalone treatment for general nervousness or anxiety disorders. The use of B6 for these purposes, therefore, is primarily supported by tradition and theoretical rationale rather than strong clinical data. It is important to note that B6 deficiency can cause neurological and psychological symptoms, including irritability and confusion, but in individuals with normal B6 status, supplementation has not been conclusively shown to reduce nervousness.
