Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Orchid species, particularly some within the genera Dendrobium and Gastrodia, have a history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda. In TCM, certain orchids are regarded as tonics for the body and are sometimes used in formulas intended to "calm the spirit" or support nervous system health. For example, Gastrodia elata (Tian Ma) is traditionally used to treat headaches, dizziness, and convulsions, and is occasionally mentioned in the context of alleviating nervousness or anxiety-like symptoms. However, the evidence supporting these uses is primarily anecdotal and based on historical practice rather than robust scientific validation. Modern clinical trials specifically investigating orchid-derived compounds for nervousness or anxiety are extremely limited, and while some pharmacological studies suggest potential neuroprotective or sedative effects for certain orchid extracts, these findings are preliminary and not directly related to the treatment of nervousness in humans. Therefore, the use of "orchid" (unspecified) for nervousness is justified by tradition, but with weak supporting evidence and little to no firm scientific backing.
