For the health condition: Nervousness
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) has a long history of traditional use in Southeast Asia, where it has been consumed for its stimulant and sedative effects. Traditionally, kratom leaves have been chewed or brewed into teas to combat fatigue, improve mood, and, in some cases, to ease symptoms of nervousness or anxiety. The primary active alkaloids in kratom, mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine, are believed to interact with opioid receptors, which may explain its calming and mood-modulating effects as described in traditional contexts.
However, scientific research on kratom’s effects specifically for nervousness or anxiety is limited and inconclusive. While some anecdotal reports and surveys suggest that users consume kratom to self-manage symptoms of anxiety or nervousness, controlled clinical trials are lacking. Preclinical studies indicate potential for both anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) and anxiogenic (anxiety-causing) effects depending on dose and user characteristics. Additionally, concerns exist about dependence, withdrawal, and adverse effects, which complicate its use for nervousness. Overall, the primary justification for using kratom in this context is based on traditional practices rather than robust scientific validation.
