Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Indian catnip (Anisomeles indica) has a longstanding history of use in traditional systems of medicine, such as Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine, for its purported calming and nervine properties. Traditionally, the leaves and flowering tops have been used as infusions or decoctions to help soothe nervousness, restlessness, and mild anxiety-like symptoms. The rationale for its use is likely due to observed mild sedative effects and its aromatic profile, which is similar to the better-known Nepeta cataria (common catnip). However, the scientific evidence supporting these claims is limited. There are a few preclinical studies suggesting that extracts of Indian catnip may possess CNS depressant effects in animal models, but robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. The evidence, therefore, relies primarily on traditional knowledge and anecdotal use, with only preliminary scientific support. Given this, while Indian catnip is genuinely used in traditional medicine for nervousness, there is insufficient scientific validation to confidently recommend it for this purpose.
