Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Night-Blooming Cereus (botanical name: Selenicereus grandiflorus or Cereus grandiflorus) has historically been used in Western herbal and homeopathic traditions, primarily as a cardiac remedy. References to its use for "nervous exhaustion"—a term historically used to describe symptoms of fatigue, stress, and nervous system depletion—are found mainly in homeopathic literature and eclectic medical texts from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. For example, the King’s American Dispensatory (Felter & Lloyd, 1898) lists Cereus grandiflorus as helpful for "nervous palpitation" and "nervous symptoms associated with heart conditions," but mentions of its direct use for nervous exhaustion are rare and not well-documented. There is no modern clinical or pharmacological evidence substantiating its efficacy for nervous exhaustion or similar neuropsychiatric conditions, and it is not commonly used in contemporary herbal medicine for this purpose. Thus, the basis for its use is almost entirely traditional, and even there, the evidence is weak and anecdotal. Its use for nervous exhaustion is not supported by rigorous studies or widespread ethnobotanical documentation.
