Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) has a long history of traditional use in Southeast Asia, particularly in countries such as Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Traditionally, kratom leaves have been chewed or brewed into a tea by laborers and farmers to combat fatigue, increase stamina, and alleviate symptoms of "nervous exhaustion," a term historically used to describe a combination of physical and mental fatigue, anxiety, and stress. Folk medicine in these regions regards kratom as a mild stimulant at low doses, purportedly providing increased energy, alertness, and improved mood, which could be interpreted as relief from nervous exhaustion.
However, while traditional use for these purposes is well-documented, scientific evidence supporting kratom’s efficacy for "nervous exhaustion" is limited. Most modern research focuses on kratom’s analgesic and opioid-like effects, dependence potential, and risks rather than its ability to treat fatigue or exhaustion. There are anecdotal reports and surveys among users suggesting mood-lifting and stimulating effects, but controlled clinical studies are lacking. Thus, the justification for kratom’s use in nervous exhaustion is primarily rooted in ethnobotanical tradition, with limited empirical support from scientific research as of 2024.
