Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Convolvulus prostratus (commonly known as Shankhpushpi) has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic and Unani medicine systems for supporting brain function and treating conditions described as “nervous exhaustion,” including symptoms like fatigue, anxiety, mental stress, and insomnia. Classical Ayurvedic texts mention Shankhpushpi as a “Medhya Rasayana,” or a brain tonic, recommended to enhance cognitive function, memory, and to promote calmness and overall mental health.

While these traditional uses are well-documented, scientific validation remains preliminary. A few in vitro and animal studies suggest potential neuroprotective, anxiolytic, and nootropic activities of extracts of Convolvulus prostratus. These studies have shown antioxidant properties, possible modulation of neurochemical pathways, and some improvement in cognitive performance in animal models. However, robust clinical trials in humans specifically investigating its efficacy for “nervous exhaustion” are lacking. Thus, while traditional evidence is strong and has led to widespread use in herbal formulations for stress and exhaustion, scientific support is limited and mostly preclinical. Overall, its use for nervous exhaustion is justified primarily by historical and traditional precedent rather than high-quality scientific evidence.
