Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Carbohydrates are a primary source of energy for the human body, including the nervous system. Scientific evidence supports the role of carbohydrates in maintaining normal brain function, as glucose (derived from carbohydrates) is the preferred fuel for the brain. Symptoms of nervous exhaustion, such as mental fatigue, irritability, and difficulty concentrating, are sometimes linked to low blood glucose levels. Clinical studies have shown that hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) can impair cognitive performance and mood, both of which are aspects of nervous exhaustion. Consuming carbohydrates can rapidly restore blood glucose levels, thereby temporarily alleviating these symptoms.

However, while carbohydrates can acutely improve symptoms of low energy and cognitive fatigue, there is limited direct research supporting their use as a treatment for chronic "nervous exhaustion," a term not widely used in modern clinical practice. Most evidence pertains to the general effects of carbohydrates on energy and mood, rather than on a specific syndrome of nervous exhaustion. Therefore, while there is a plausible physiological connection, the evidence is indirect and limited in scope.
