Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Amber has been traditionally used in various cultures, particularly in Europe and Asia, as a remedy for ailments related to the nervous system, including what was once termed "nervous exhaustion" (now often referred to as neurasthenia or chronic fatigue syndrome). In traditional European herbal medicine and some systems of folk medicine, amber—often in the form of powders, tinctures, or amulets—was believed to have calming properties and the ability to balance the nervous system. These uses were usually based on the perceived energetic qualities of amber and its historical association with protection and healing.

However, there is little to no scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of amber for treating nervous exhaustion. Modern clinical studies evaluating amber’s pharmacological effects on the nervous system are lacking. Some proponents cite the succinic acid present in amber as a potential therapeutic component, but research demonstrating its bioavailability and effectiveness in humans when amber is worn or ingested is insufficient. The tradition persists more in complementary and alternative medicine circles than in mainstream medical practice. Therefore, while amber’s use is justified by tradition, the evidence supporting its efficacy is weak and largely anecdotal.
