In these traditions, nutmeg is sometimes used as a calming agent, believed to alleviate nervousness, anxiety, and insomnia. Its warming, aromatic properties have led to its inclusion in various formulations intended to soothe nerves and promote restful sleep.
From a scientific perspective, there is limited but emerging evidence regarding nutmeg’s effects on the nervous system. Some animal studies suggest that nutmeg extracts may possess sedative and anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) properties, possibly due to compounds like myristicin, elemicin, and safrole, which can affect neurotransmitter pathways.
