Kudzu (Pueraria lobata) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), where it is known as "Ge Gen." In TCM, kudzu root is often employed to "release the muscles," "alleviate fever," and "ease stiff neck and upper back." It is also sometimes used for symptoms such as headaches and dizziness, which may be related to nervous system function. However, the rationale in traditional medicine is not strictly aligned with modern concepts of the nervous system, and its use is more generalized for symptoms that could be interpreted as nervous or muscular tension.

Scientifically, there is some preliminary evidence that certain isoflavones found in kudzu (notably puerarin) may exert neuroprotective effects in vitro and in animal studies, such as reducing neuronal damage or influencing neurotransmitter levels. However, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking, and the evidence is not strong enough to support clinical recommendations for nervous system support. Most human studies focus on alcohol dependence and cravings, rather than direct effects on neurological health or disorders.

In summary, the use of kudzu for supporting the nerves or nervous system is primarily justified by tradition, with very limited scientific validation. The evidence for its efficacy in this area is weak, and primarily based on traditional uses rather than rigorous clinical research.
