Gamma linolenic acid (GLA) is an omega-6 fatty acid found in various plant oils, such as evening primrose oil and borage oil. Its use to support the nervous system is based on some scientific evidence, though the strength of this evidence is limited and mixed. GLA is a precursor to dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid (DGLA), which may help modulate inflammation and contribute to nerve health. Some studies have examined the role of GLA in peripheral neuropathy, particularly in diabetic patients. For example, several clinical trials have found that supplementation with GLA may improve symptoms such as numbness, tingling, and pain in diabetic neuropathy, possibly by supporting nerve membrane structure and function. However, other studies have either failed to find a significant benefit or have raised questions about the clinical relevance of the effects observed.

There is less evidence for GLA benefiting other nervous system conditions, such as multiple sclerosis or general nerve health in healthy individuals. Overall, while there is some scientific support—particularly relating to diabetic neuropathy—the evidence base is not strong or comprehensive, and most guidelines do not recommend GLA as a primary therapy. Further high-quality research is needed to clarify its role and efficacy. GLA's use for nerve support is not primarily rooted in traditional medicine but in modern scientific investigation.
