Fish, including shellfish, is scientifically supported as beneficial for the nervous system, primarily due to its high content of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, especially eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). These nutrients are essential for normal brain function and development. Numerous clinical and epidemiological studies have demonstrated that regular consumption of fish is associated with a lower risk of cognitive decline, dementia, and depression in adults, as well as improved neurodevelopmental outcomes in infants and children. Shellfish also provides significant amounts of vitamin B12, selenium, and zinc, all of which are important for nerve health and function. The American Heart Association, as well as other major health organizations, recommend regular fish consumption for overall brain and nervous system health. While some of the research is observational, randomized controlled trials have shown that supplementation with fish oil (rich in EPA/DHA) can improve certain cognitive parameters, particularly in populations at risk of deficiency. However, the degree of benefit varies depending on individual baseline nutrient status and the presence of neurological disorders.
