Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Vitamin B6, particularly in its active form pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (PLP), has scientific backing for its role in supporting nerve health. B6 is essential in neurotransmitter synthesis, myelin formation, and overall neuronal metabolism. Deficiency in vitamin B6 is a known cause of peripheral neuropathy, a type of nerve damage, and supplementation is a standard treatment in such cases. Clinical studies and case reports confirm that correcting B6 deficiency can reverse or improve neuropathic symptoms. However, the evidence for using vitamin B6 to treat nerve damage in people without a deficiency is less robust. Some studies have explored its use in diabetic neuropathy and carpal tunnel syndrome, with mixed results. Importantly, excess B6 (usually >200 mg/day) can itself cause sensory neuropathy, so careful dosing is required. Overall, vitamin B6 is scientifically validated for treating nerve damage due to deficiency, but its efficacy in other neuropathic conditions is less clear and requires further research.
