Rating (out of 5): 4

Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) is scientifically validated for use in supporting and treating certain types of nerve damage, particularly that caused by vitamin B12 deficiency. B12 is essential for normal nerve function and the maintenance of the myelin sheath, a protective covering around nerves. Deficiency in B12 can result in neurological symptoms ranging from numbness and tingling to serious neuropathy and cognitive disturbances. Numerous clinical studies have demonstrated that B12 supplementation can halt progression and, in some cases, reverse neurological symptoms in patients with B12 deficiency-induced neuropathy. A 2018 review in the journal Current Medicinal Chemistry summarizes that B12 supplementation is effective in treating peripheral neuropathy due to deficiency, and that early intervention is crucial for optimal recovery. Randomized trials have also shown that B12, sometimes in combination with other B vitamins, can improve symptoms in diabetic neuropathy, although evidence in non-deficient populations is less robust. While B12 is not effective for all types of nerve damage (for example, hereditary neuropathies or those unrelated to B12 status), its use is standard of care when deficiency is implicated. The scientific basis for its use is strong in these contexts, though it is not a universal remedy for all nerve-related disorders.
