Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin) is scientifically validated for use in the prevention and treatment of certain types of nerve damage, particularly those resulting from vitamin B12 deficiency. B12 is essential for normal nerve function, as it is involved in the synthesis of myelin—the protective sheath that surrounds nerves. Deficiency of B12 can lead to demyelination, resulting in neuropathy characterized by numbness, tingling, balance issues, and cognitive disturbances.

Numerous clinical studies and case reports confirm that B12 supplementation can reverse or halt the progression of nerve damage caused by deficiency, especially if treatment is initiated early. The most robust evidence comes from patients with pernicious anemia, malabsorption syndromes, or dietary insufficiency (such as in strict vegans). Parenteral or high-dose oral B12 has demonstrated clear benefit in correcting both hematologic and neurological symptoms.

However, the benefit of B12 supplementation for nerve damage not related to deficiency (e.g., diabetic neuropathy in individuals with normal B12 levels) is less clear, with mixed or inconclusive evidence in clinical trials. In summary, the scientific evidence strongly supports B12’s use in treating and preventing nerve damage caused by B12 deficiency, but not in cases where deficiency is not present.
