San-Qi Ginseng, also known as Panax notoginseng, has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for various health conditions, including trauma, bleeding, and circulatory issues. Its use for nerve damage (neuropathy or neuroprotection) is primarily rooted in tradition rather than robust scientific evidence. In TCM, San-Qi is believed to "invigorate the blood" and "remove blood stasis," which is sometimes interpreted as supporting recovery from injuries, including those affecting nerves. A few preliminary scientific studies suggest that notoginsenosides, the active compounds in San-Qi, may possess neuroprotective effects in animal models. These studies indicate potential benefits such as reducing oxidative stress, inhibiting apoptosis (cell death), and promoting nerve regeneration after injury. However, the quality and quantity of clinical research in humans are very limited, and these findings have not yet translated into approved or standardized treatments for nerve damage. Therefore, while San-Qi Ginseng is traditionally used to support recovery from nerve-related injuries, the scientific evidence remains sparse and largely preclinical. Its use for this purpose should be considered as complementary, and more rigorous human studies are needed to confirm efficacy and safety.
