Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) is a well-characterized neurotrophin—a protein that plays a crucial role in the growth, maintenance, and survival of certain neurons. Its use in supporting or treating nerve damage is primarily justified by a strong body of scientific research. NGF was first discovered in the 1950s, and since then, numerous preclinical studies have established its role in promoting nerve regeneration, particularly in the peripheral nervous system. Animal models have shown that administration of NGF can enhance nerve regeneration after injury, reduce neuronal death, and support functional recovery.

Clinical trials in humans have been more limited, but some studies have explored NGF’s potential in treating conditions such as diabetic neuropathy, peripheral nerve injuries, and even neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s. For example, NGF has been administered via topical eye drops to treat neurotrophic keratitis, a degenerative eye disease caused by nerve damage, with positive results leading to regulatory approval in some regions.

However, challenges remain regarding delivery methods, side effects (such as pain), and cost, limiting its widespread clinical use. Nonetheless, the scientific rationale for using NGF to support nerve repair is robust, and ongoing research continues to explore safer and more effective ways to harness its therapeutic potential.
