Evidence supporting the use of: Deer
For the health condition: Nerve Damage
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Deer-derived ingredients, particularly deer antler velvet, have been used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and other traditional medicinal systems for centuries to support various health conditions, including those related to nerve damage or weakness. In TCM, deer antler velvet is considered a tonic that can "nourish the kidney" and "invigorate yang," which are sometimes associated with promoting vitality and recovery from injuries, including those affecting the nerves. However, direct references to its use specifically for nerve damage are limited in classical texts; its inclusion is more general for recovery and strengthening the body after illness or trauma.
Scientific evidence supporting the use of deer products for nerve damage is minimal to nonexistent. While some modern studies have explored the bioactive components of deer antler velvet, such as growth factors and amino acids, robust clinical trials demonstrating efficacy for nerve regeneration or repair in humans are lacking. Most available research is preclinical, involving animal models or in vitro studies, and does not directly translate to clear therapeutic benefits for nerve damage in humans. Therefore, while the traditional use exists, the quality and specificity of evidence are weak.
