Rating (out of 5): 1

Lovage (Levisticum officinale) has a long history of use in traditional European herbal medicine, particularly for urinary tract issues, including as a diuretic and for supporting kidney health. In traditional folk medicine, lovage root was often employed to "flush out" the urinary tract and was believed to help with inflammatory kidney conditions, such as nephritis (inflammation of the kidneys). This use is reflected in early European pharmacopeias and herbal texts. The presumed mechanism was primarily through increasing urine flow, thereby reducing stagnation and aiding in the elimination of wastes and possibly bacteria.

However, modern scientific evidence supporting lovage’s efficacy specifically for nephritis is scarce. While some studies have demonstrated that lovage contains compounds (such as phthalides and coumarins) with mild diuretic and anti-inflammatory properties, there are no robust clinical trials confirming its benefit for nephritis. In fact, because nephritis can involve severe kidney inflammation, increased urination may not always be beneficial, and self-treatment is not recommended. The European Medicines Agency recognizes lovage root as a traditional herbal medicinal product for the relief of urinary tract discomfort and as a diuretic, but not specifically for nephritis.

In summary, lovage’s use for nephritis is primarily supported by traditional rather than scientific evidence. Its historical application is rooted in its general effects on the urinary system, but these do not equate to proven efficacy for nephritis by modern medical standards.
