Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Ligustrum (commonly known as privet, and including species such as Ligustrum lucidum) has been used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for centuries. In TCM practice, Ligustrum lucidum (known as "Nv Zhen Zi") is employed for its purported ability to nourish the liver and kidneys, and is often included in herbal formulas aimed at treating symptoms associated with kidney yin deficiency, which can include manifestations consistent with nephritis. However, the use of Ligustrum for nephritis is based predominantly on traditional concepts and historical usage rather than direct scientific validation.
There is limited scientific research specifically investigating Ligustrum's efficacy in treating nephritis. Some laboratory studies suggest that extracts of Ligustrum lucidum possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory properties, which, in theory, could be beneficial in conditions involving kidney inflammation. Nevertheless, these findings are preliminary and largely preclinical, with a lack of robust clinical trials examining Ligustrum's direct effects in nephritis patients. As such, its use for nephritis is primarily justified by tradition, and the scientific evidence to support this use remains weak.
