Evidence supporting the use of: Lentinula edodes mycelia
For the health condition: Nephritis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Lentinula edodes mycelia, commonly known as the mycelial form of shiitake mushroom, has been investigated for its potential nephroprotective effects, particularly in experimental models of nephritis. Scientific studies, primarily preclinical (animal and cell culture) research, suggest that extracts from L. edodes mycelia may help attenuate kidney inflammation and damage. The proposed mechanisms involve the modulation of immune responses, antioxidative effects, and the inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Some studies have demonstrated that lentinan, a polysaccharide found in L. edodes, can decrease proteinuria, reduce glomerular injury, and improve renal function markers in models of nephritis and other kidney injuries.
However, it is important to note that most of the available evidence comes from laboratory and animal studies, with very limited clinical trials in humans specifically targeting nephritis. In Japan and several East Asian countries, L. edodes mycelia extracts are sometimes used in functional foods or supplements aimed at supporting kidney health, but these uses are often based on experimental evidence rather than robust human clinical data.
Given the encouraging but preliminary nature of the scientific findings, the evidence level is rated as 2 out of 5. This indicates that while there is scientific rationale and some experimental support for the use of L. edodes mycelia in nephritis, high-quality clinical studies are needed before it can be widely recommended for this purpose.
