Evidence supporting the use of: Hyperoside
For the health condition: Nephritis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Hyperoside is a flavonoid glycoside found in various medicinal plants, including Hypericum perforatum and Crataegus species. Its use in nephritis (inflammation of the kidneys) is primarily supported by preclinical studies rather than extensive traditional use or robust clinical trials. Laboratory and animal studies have shown that hyperoside exhibits anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-apoptotic effects, which can be beneficial in conditions like nephritis. For example, several in vivo studies using rodent models of nephritis have demonstrated that hyperoside administration can reduce proteinuria, attenuate histopathological kidney damage, and decrease levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α and IL-6. These effects are thought to be mediated through pathways such as the inhibition of NF-κB signaling and reduction of oxidative stress within renal tissues.
However, there is a lack of large-scale human clinical trials evaluating hyperoside for nephritis, and its direct use in traditional medicine for this specific condition is not well-documented. The current evidence is mainly limited to experimental models, which means that while the scientific rationale for its use exists, the overall evidence base is still preliminary. Therefore, hyperoside's use for nephritis is justified by early scientific investigation, but further research—particularly in humans—is necessary to confirm its efficacy and safety.
