Evidence supporting the use of: Chinese Quince
For the health condition: Nephritis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Chinese Quince (Chaenomeles speciosa, also known as "Mu Gua" in Traditional Chinese Medicine) has a long history of use in East Asian herbal medicine, mostly for its supposed benefits in treating musculoskeletal disorders, digestive complaints, and as an anti-inflammatory agent. Its application in supporting nephritis (inflammation of the kidneys) is primarily based on traditional use rather than robust scientific validation. In TCM theory, Mu Gua is believed to dispel dampness, relax the sinews, and harmonize the stomach, and it is sometimes included in formulas aimed at addressing "damp-heat" conditions that could correspond to certain kidney disorders, including nephritis. Scientific studies on Chinese Quince’s efficacy for nephritis specifically are minimal. While there is some laboratory evidence pointing to anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities in extracts of Chinese Quince, these studies do not directly address nephritis or provide clear clinical relevance. No high-quality clinical trials have been published to validate its use for nephritis in humans. Therefore, the use of Chinese Quince for nephritis is justified primarily by traditional practice, and the supporting evidence is limited to anecdotal or empirical reports within the context of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
