Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Sassafras (Sassafras albidum) has a longstanding history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly among Native American tribes and early European settlers in North America. It has been employed as a general tonic, ingredient in root beer, and remedy for various ailments, including nausea and vomiting. Historical texts and folk medicine sources mention sassafras tea or infusions being used to 'settle the stomach' or address digestive complaints. However, these uses are based on anecdotal and traditional practice rather than robust scientific evidence.

To date, there is little to no clinical research or controlled scientific studies confirming the efficacy of sassafras for treating nausea and vomiting. Modern use is limited by safety concerns, as the primary active compound in sassafras oil, safrole, is recognized as a potential carcinogen and is banned as a food additive by the FDA. Thus, while its use for nausea is well documented in traditional sources, there is minimal to no modern evidence to support its effectiveness, and health risks outweigh any potential historic benefits.
