Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Red raspberry (Rubus idaeus) leaf has a long history of traditional use, particularly in European and North American herbal medicine, to ease symptoms such as nausea and vomiting—especially in pregnancy and as a general digestive aid. Historical texts and folk remedies often recommend raspberry leaf tea for women experiencing morning sickness or digestive discomfort. However, while this traditional use is well-documented, the scientific evidence supporting its effectiveness for nausea and vomiting remains limited and inconclusive.

Most of the available research on red raspberry leaf focuses on its possible effects on uterine tone and labor, rather than its impact on nausea or vomiting. The leaf contains tannins and flavonoids, which may have a mild astringent effect on mucous membranes and could hypothetically soothe the digestive tract, but direct clinical trials evaluating these effects for nausea are lacking. Modern authoritative reviews, such as those by the National Institutes of Health and systematic reviews of herbal remedies in pregnancy, generally conclude that more research is needed to confirm any benefit for nausea or vomiting. Thus, while its use is rooted in tradition, scientific validation is minimal at this time.
