Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Piper retrofractum, commonly known as Javanese long pepper, has a historical use in traditional medicine systems in Southeast Asia, particularly in Indonesia and Thailand. In these traditions, it has been employed as a remedy for various digestive complaints, including nausea and vomiting. The rationale for its use is typically rooted in its pungency and carminative properties, which are believed to help stimulate digestion and reduce gastrointestinal discomfort. However, published scientific studies specifically investigating the antiemetic (anti-nausea and vomiting) effects of Piper retrofractum are very limited. Most available data focus on its general antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant activities. While some related Piper species (such as Piper nigrum and Piper longum) have shown antiemetic activity in preclinical studies, there is little direct, high-quality evidence for Piper retrofractum itself. Therefore, its use for nausea and vomiting is supported mainly by traditional knowledge rather than rigorous scientific research, resulting in a low evidence rating.
