Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Grass-leaved calamus (Acorus gramineus) has been traditionally used in various Asian medical systems, especially in Chinese and Japanese herbal medicine, as a remedy for ailments including nausea and vomiting. The rhizome of Acorus species, particularly Acorus calamus and Acorus gramineus, has been valued for its carminative and antiemetic properties in traditional medicine texts. Historical records, such as those in Chinese materia medica, describe its use for digestive complaints, including stomach upset and nausea. However, scientific evidence supporting these uses is limited. While there are some animal studies and phytochemical analyses suggesting that compounds in Acorus species may have effects on the gastrointestinal system—such as relaxing smooth muscle or modulating neurotransmitter activity—these studies are sparse and often do not focus specifically on Acorus gramineus, nor do they always address nausea or vomiting directly. Moreover, high-quality human clinical trials are lacking. In summary, the use of Grass-leaved calamus for nausea and vomiting is primarily justified by traditional knowledge rather than robust scientific validation. Caution is also warranted because some species of Acorus, particularly Acorus calamus, contain β-asarone, a compound with potential toxicity. Reliable clinical evidence for efficacy and safety remains insufficient.
