Evidence supporting the use of: Cubebs
For the health condition: Nausea and Vomiting
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Cubebs (Piper cubeba) have a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and traditional Arabic and European medicine. They have been used to treat a variety of ailments, including digestive complaints. However, the specific use of cubebs for nausea and vomiting is not strongly emphasized in major traditional texts when compared to other herbs such as ginger or peppermint. Some traditional sources mention cubebs as being beneficial for the digestive system, possibly due to their carminative (gas-relieving) and stomachic (appetite-stimulating) properties, which might indirectly help in conditions where nausea is present. Nevertheless, concrete references to their use for acute nausea or vomiting are sparse and not well-documented.
There is little to no modern scientific research directly investigating cubebs for the treatment or support of nausea and vomiting. Most available studies focus on other possible properties of cubebs, such as antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects. Therefore, while there is some weak traditional rationale for their use in general digestive health, the evidence specifically supporting cubebs for nausea and vomiting is minimal, and the use for this purpose cannot be recommended based on current data.
