Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Commiphora, a genus that includes species such as Commiphora myrrha (myrrh), has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and traditional Middle Eastern medicine. However, its primary historical applications have focused on treating wounds, inflammation, and infections, as well as for its aromatic properties. There is some mention in traditional texts of Commiphora being used to address digestive complaints, including stomach discomfort, but specific and consistent documentation regarding its use for nausea and vomiting is limited. The evidence supporting Commiphora for nausea and vomiting is therefore weak and largely anecdotal, without robust traditional protocols or widespread recognition for this indication. Scientific studies evaluating the efficacy of Commiphora species for nausea and vomiting are lacking; there are no well-designed clinical trials or pharmacological studies directly demonstrating antiemetic effects. Most research focuses on other properties, such as anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects. As a result, while there may be minimal traditional precedent for its use in digestive complaints, the overall evidence is scant, and Commiphora cannot be considered a well-supported remedy for nausea and vomiting.
