Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Chirata (Swertia chirata) has been traditionally used in Ayurveda and other traditional medicine systems in South Asia to manage digestive issues, including nausea and vomiting. The plant is valued for its bitter principles, primarily secoiridoid glycosides like swertiamarin and amarogentin, which are believed to stimulate appetite and promote digestion. In classical Ayurvedic texts, Chirata is often recommended for conditions such as "ama" (toxic build-up from improper digestion), fever, and gastrointestinal disturbances, including nausea and emesis (vomiting).

However, direct scientific evidence supporting Chirata’s efficacy for nausea and vomiting is limited. Most modern studies focus on its antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, and hepatoprotective effects. While its traditional use for digestive complaints is well-documented, clinical trials specifically evaluating its antiemetic (anti-nausea) properties are lacking. Thus, its use for nausea and vomiting is justified mainly by historical and traditional practices rather than strong scientific validation. Further research is needed to confirm its effectiveness and safety for these indications in contemporary clinical settings.
