Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Chinese Silkvine (Periploca sepium), known as "Xiānɡ Jiā Pí" (香加皮) in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has a long history of use primarily for indications such as dispelling wind-dampness, tonifying kidney yang, and relieving pain in the context of rheumatic conditions. While TCM texts sometimes reference its use for symptoms that could include digestive disturbance, there is limited evidence or emphasis on its direct use for nausea and vomiting. In the rare cases where it is included in formulas addressing digestive issues, its role is secondary to more established antiemetic herbs (such as ginger or pinellia). Modern pharmacological studies on Chinese Silkvine focus primarily on its cardiotonic, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory effects, with little to no research directly supporting anti-nausea or antiemetic actions. Therefore, while there may be some historical precedent within traditional medicine systems for its use in broader digestive complaints, both the traditional and scientific support for specifically treating nausea and vomiting is minimal.
