Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Carvone, a monoterpene found in essential oils of plants such as spearmint and caraway, has a long history in traditional medicine, particularly in herbal remedies for digestive complaints. Its use to support or treat nausea and vomiting is primarily based on this traditional context, especially in European and Middle Eastern herbal practices, where caraway and mint preparations are used to alleviate gastrointestinal discomfort, including indigestion and mild nausea. However, direct scientific validation for carvone itself as an antiemetic is limited. Some preclinical studies suggest that carvone and related essential oils may exert antispasmodic and carminative effects, which could indirectly help with symptoms like nausea by relaxing gastrointestinal smooth muscle and improving digestion. Nonetheless, clinical trials specifically evaluating carvone for nausea and vomiting are lacking. Therefore, while its use persists in traditional medicine, the evidence rating is low due to the absence of robust clinical data and reliance on historical precedent and anecdotal reports.
