Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Bananas have traditionally been used as part of dietary recommendations for managing nausea and vomiting, particularly in the context of gastrointestinal disturbances such as gastroenteritis and during recovery from illness. The "BRAT" diet (Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast) has been commonly recommended by healthcare providers and caregivers, especially for children, as these foods are bland, low in fiber, and less likely to irritate the stomach. Bananas are thought to be gentle on the stomach and can help replace potassium lost through vomiting. However, these recommendations are based primarily on tradition and anecdotal observations rather than robust clinical evidence.

Scientific studies directly evaluating bananas as a treatment for nausea and vomiting are limited. While bananas are a good source of potassium and carbohydrates and can help with electrolyte balance and energy, there is no strong evidence that they have antiemetic properties or directly reduce nausea. Some guidelines now suggest that the restrictive BRAT diet may not provide adequate nutrition for prolonged recovery, and broader refeeding is often encouraged. Nonetheless, bananas remain a commonly accepted food during periods of mild gastrointestinal upset due to their digestibility and nutritional content, rather than proven anti-nausea effects.
