Rating (out of 5): 1

Agarwood (Aquilaria spp.), known as "oud" or "aloeswood," has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems across Asia, particularly in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Ayurveda, and Unani medicine. It is reputed for its calming properties, and in some traditional pharmacopoeias, it is described as beneficial for digestive complaints such as nausea and vomiting. In TCM, agarwood is considered to regulate "qi," warm the middle burner, and relieve pain, and it is sometimes included in herbal formulas aimed at treating gastrointestinal discomfort, including nausea. However, these uses are based on empirical tradition rather than systematic scientific evaluation. Modern scientific research on agarwood has largely focused on its antimicrobial, antioxidant, and sedative effects, with limited direct investigation into its anti-nausea or antiemetic properties. To date, there is a lack of robust clinical or pharmacological studies validating its efficacy specifically for nausea and vomiting. Some essential oil components from agarwood have shown spasmolytic or calming effects in animal models, but these findings are not sufficient to recommend its use for nausea in evidence-based practice. Overall, agarwood's use for nausea and vomiting is primarily justified by traditional use, with minimal scientific validation.
