Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Kelp, a type of seaweed, is sometimes used as a dietary supplement to support nail health due to its high content of minerals, particularly iodine and, to a lesser extent, trace amounts of calcium, magnesium, iron, and zinc. Scientifically, brittle nails can sometimes be associated with deficiencies in certain nutrients, including some minerals found in kelp. However, there is limited direct research linking kelp supplementation specifically to improved nail health in otherwise healthy individuals. Most of the rationale for kelp’s use comes from its ability to support general thyroid function (due to iodine), since thyroid health can indirectly influence the condition of hair and nails.

Current scientific evidence does not robustly support the idea that kelp directly strengthens or improves nail growth in the general population. Some small observational studies suggest that correcting iodine deficiency or certain mineral deficiencies may help improve nail structure, but supplementation with kelp is not specifically studied for this outcome. Excessive intake of kelp can lead to thyroid dysfunction due to its high iodine content, which may actually have negative effects on nails in some cases.

In summary, while kelp contains nutrients that are important for overall health, including nails, there is only weak scientific evidence directly supporting its use as a targeted supplement for nail health. Its use is better supported for correcting specific nutrient deficiencies rather than as a general nail health remedy.
