Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

DL-Methionine is an essential amino acid used in various dietary supplements, including those targeting nail health. Scientifically, methionine is a sulfur-containing amino acid that contributes to the synthesis of keratin, the primary protein in nails. Keratin’s structure relies on disulfide bonds, which are formed using sulfur atoms supplied by amino acids like methionine and cysteine. As such, methionine is theoretically important for the maintenance of strong, healthy nails.

However, direct evidence from clinical studies demonstrating that supplemental DL-methionine improves nail growth or quality in healthy humans is limited. Most supportive data are indirect, relating to the biochemistry of keratin production and animal studies showing that sulfur amino acids are essential for hoof and hair health. Some small studies and case reports in humans suggest that deficiencies in sulfur amino acids may lead to brittle nails, but robust, placebo-controlled clinical trials specifically investigating DL-methionine supplementation for nail health are lacking.

For these reasons, the scientific rationale for methionine’s inclusion in nail-support formulas is based more on its known biochemical role than on direct clinical evidence. Its evidence rating is moderate to low (2/5), reflecting the gap between theoretical benefit and proven clinical efficacy.
