Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Amino Acid Blends/Complexes are commonly used to support nail health, and there is scientific validation for their use. Nails are composed primarily of keratin, a protein that is built from amino acids. Adequate intake of essential amino acids is necessary for the synthesis of keratin and, by extension, for maintaining strong and healthy nails. Clinical studies have shown that deficiencies in certain amino acids (such as cysteine and methionine, which are sulfur-containing and crucial for keratin structure) are associated with weak, brittle, or slow-growing nails. Supplementation with amino acids has been found to improve nail strength and growth in individuals with deficiencies or increased needs. Additionally, some randomized controlled trials using oral supplementation with amino acid complexes (sometimes combined with vitamins and minerals) have reported improvements in nail thickness and resilience. However, it should be noted that while amino acid supplementation benefits individuals with inadequate dietary protein or specific deficiencies, evidence for benefits in otherwise healthy individuals with adequate protein intake is less robust. Overall, scientific evidence supports the use of amino acid blends to promote nail health, particularly in populations at risk of deficiency or with increased protein requirements.
