Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), have been studied for their potential benefits in neuromuscular disorders, including Muscular Dystrophy (MD). The scientific rationale is based on their anti-inflammatory and membrane-stabilizing properties. Preclinical studies, especially in animal models like the mdx mouse (used to model Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy), have shown that omega-3 supplementation can reduce muscle inflammation, oxidative stress, and fibrosis, potentially slowing disease progression. A few small-scale human studies and case reports suggest that omega-3s may help preserve muscle function and reduce markers of muscle damage in MD patients, but these findings are preliminary.

Despite promising preclinical data, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. The available human studies are limited by small sample sizes, short durations, and methodological weaknesses, making it difficult to draw firm conclusions. There is currently no consensus in clinical guidelines to recommend omega-3 fatty acids as standard therapy in MD. However, their favorable safety profile and potential for adjunctive benefit mean they are sometimes used as a complementary therapy. Overall, while there is some scientific basis for their use, the evidence is weak (rated 2 out of 5), and more rigorous clinical research is needed to confirm efficacy.
