Vitamin E (alpha tocopherol) is an antioxidant that has been studied for its potential role in supporting muscle health, particularly in preventing or mitigating muscle damage caused by oxidative stress. Research indicates that Vitamin E helps neutralize free radicals, which can be generated in higher amounts during intense physical activity or in certain muscle disorders. Some clinical and animal studies suggest that Vitamin E supplementation can reduce exercise-induced muscle damage and inflammation. For example, supplementation has been shown to lower markers of oxidative stress and may aid in muscle recovery following strenuous exercise. Additionally, Vitamin E deficiency in humans and animals can lead to muscle weakness and degeneration, supporting a biological role for this vitamin in maintaining muscle integrity. However, evidence supporting the use of Vitamin E supplementation for enhancing muscle strength, growth, or performance in healthy, non-deficient individuals is limited and inconsistent. Large-scale, well-controlled human trials have not consistently demonstrated significant benefits in muscle function or prevention of muscle-related diseases with Vitamin E supplementation. Therefore, while there is a scientific rationale for Vitamin E’s role in muscle health, the overall quality and consistency of evidence for its routine use in supporting muscle function is moderate to low, and it is primarily justified in the context of deficiency or increased oxidative stress.
