Evidence supporting the use of: Rhaponticum carthamoides
For the body system: Muscles
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Rhaponticum carthamoides, also known as maral root or leuzea, is an herb traditionally used in Russian and Eastern European folk medicine as a tonic and adaptogen. Its use to support the muscular system is primarily based on both traditional anecdotes and scientific studies. The root contains unique compounds called ecdysteroids (notably 20-hydroxyecdysone), which are plant analogs to steroid hormones. Animal and limited human studies suggest that these compounds can enhance protein synthesis, promote muscle growth, and improve physical performance. For example, research has shown that ecdysteroids may increase muscle mass and physical endurance in rodents, and a few small human trials have indicated possible improvements in strength and body composition. However, the quality and size of clinical trials are not yet robust enough for unequivocal conclusions. Despite this, the existing scientific evidence does offer some support for the use of Rhaponticum carthamoides extracts, particularly standardized ecdysteroid preparations, for promoting muscle health and performance, especially when combined with resistance training. Overall, while further research is warranted, the current evidence base justifies a moderate scientific rating regarding its application for muscle support.
