Ornithine is an amino acid involved in the urea cycle, which helps remove excess nitrogen from the body. Its use for supporting the muscular system is primarily based on its potential to reduce fatigue and support recovery after exercise. Some scientific studies—mainly small-scale or preliminary—suggest that ornithine supplementation may help decrease perceived fatigue and improve endurance in athletes by promoting ammonia clearance during prolonged exercise. However, the evidence is not robust; a few randomized controlled trials have shown modest benefits, but others have found no significant effects. Most studies use relatively small sample sizes, and the mechanisms by which ornithine could enhance muscle function or growth are not well defined beyond its role in nitrogen metabolism. There is no strong evidence that ornithine directly increases muscle mass, strength, or performance in healthy individuals. The use of ornithine for muscle support is therefore supported by limited scientific evidence and cannot be considered well-established.
