Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Flavanols are a subclass of flavonoids found in foods such as cocoa, tea, apples, and berries. There is emerging scientific interest in the potential role of flavanols in supporting muscle health, primarily due to their antioxidant and vasodilatory properties. Some small clinical studies and preclinical research suggest that flavanol-rich foods, particularly cocoa, may improve vascular function and increase blood flow, which could theoretically benefit muscle performance and recovery by enhancing oxygen and nutrient delivery to muscle tissue.

However, direct evidence supporting the use of flavanols specifically for muscle strength, growth, or recovery in humans is limited and mostly preliminary. Most research has focused on cardiovascular outcomes, with improvements in endothelial function and blood pressure. A few studies have examined exercise performance; for example, some trials have noted modest improvements in exercise capacity or muscle fatigue resistance following acute or short-term flavanol supplementation, but results are inconsistent and often involve small participant numbers.

No large-scale or long-term trials have conclusively demonstrated that flavanols significantly enhance muscle mass, strength, or recovery. Therefore, while there is a scientific rationale and some emerging evidence for potential support of the muscle body system via improved circulation and reduced oxidative stress, the overall quality and quantity of evidence is currently low. More robust research is needed to establish a clear benefit.
