Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Creatine and glutamine are two distinct amino acid-based supplements commonly used to support muscle health and athletic performance. Creatine is one of the most researched sports supplements and is scientifically validated for its role in enhancing muscle energy production, strength, and mass. Numerous randomized controlled trials have shown that creatine supplementation increases phosphocreatine stores in muscles, which helps regenerate ATP during high-intensity, short-duration activities like weightlifting and sprinting. This leads to improved exercise performance and, over time, greater gains in muscle mass and strength.

Glutamine, on the other hand, is an amino acid found abundantly in muscle tissue and is sometimes marketed for muscle recovery, immune function, and reducing muscle soreness. However, current scientific evidence for glutamine's benefits in supporting muscle growth or recovery in healthy individuals is limited. Most studies show little to no significant effect of glutamine supplementation on muscle mass or performance in the context of typical training.

When combined as "creatine glutamine," the primary muscle-supporting effects are attributed to creatine, not glutamine. The evidence rating is moderate (3/5) because the scientific support for creatine is strong, while glutamine's contribution is weak or unproven in this context. Therefore, while the use of creatine (alone or in combination) is justified by scientific evidence, the addition of glutamine does not substantially enhance muscle support based on current research.
